Kirk Cousins is out, Michael Penix Jr. is in!
After two weeks, it is safe to say that Penix is the real deal! The Falcons GM made the biggest curveball move during the 2024 Draft after signing Kirk Cousins to a mega contract deal that had a lot of people question as to why he made the call to draft Penix in the 1st Round. However, after just two games late in the season, we can all agree that his judgement on the talent he saw in Penix was ELITE!
What does Michael Penix Jr. bring to the the Falcons? One thing we saw is that it opened up the run game to allow Bijan Robinson to dominate the way we all thought. Just this past weekend, Bijan rushed for 90 yards and 2 TD's while allowing Drake London and Kyle Pitts to be the two leading receivers. Now I think that Michael Penix Jr. still has a lot to improve on which we all know he is an elite deep pass threat but he needs to chill out on the 95 MPH slant routes that his WR's are having a hard time adjusting to. More importantly, he came in clutch at the end of the 4th quarter against the Commanders and tied the game with a TD pass...so we all saw a glimpse of a rookie that can handle big moments! Then we all got to witness another game winning moment from Jayden Daniel's who is the future of the NFL!
What does this mean for Michael Penix Jr. in the hobby? Well, for starters he is the only starting rookie QB that is signing sports cards with Panini so there is already desired value in the hobby as there is a huge missing piece of non-autographed sports cards of some of today's rookie QB's. There is a huge opportunity to grab RPA's and other variations of autographsof his at an affordable price that I believe will only go up in value over time.
When it comes to non-licensed product, I would highly avoid investing in autographs of Penix specifically because he has autographs in a licensed product. There is just a much more desirable demand with licensed autographs than not. Box Nix, Jayden Daniel's & Caleb Williams will be hot commodities in Fanatics/Topps products just due to the fact that collectors will want to have at least something in their collection and Fanatics has done a great job when it comes to the eye appeal but we all saw how quickly the value dropped on those autographs, but the chase itself was a lot of fun to see!
