Zion Williamson & Prizm Rookie Cards MAJOR DROP OFF!

Zion Williamson & Prizm Rookie Cards MAJOR DROP OFF!

2019 NBA Rookie Class was an electric time in the hobby with Zion Williamson entering coming out of Duke with the #1 Overall Pick to the New Orleans Pelicans. The amount of hype even for collegiate autograph cards was absurd to where you would see autographs from Contenders Draft Picks sell for thousands of dollars just because people were willing to spend any amount just to get their hands on a Zion autograph. Now you can buy them for $100-$150.

Fast forward to 2019 Prizm Hobby release...it was complete chaos to the point where breakers and collectors were happy just to hit a base prizm rookie card in hopes to grade it and sell a PSA 10 Base for $600-$1,000!

PSA Pop Count for a Zion Prizm Base Rookie PSA 10 is 23,110 with todays value of  $25...thats over 95% loss in the course of 4 years!

Now let's get to the very sought after but very common parallel...Silver Prizm Rookies. In late 2020, Zion Williamson Prizm Silver PSA 10's were selling for an astonishing amount of $6,000+. I thoroughly enjoy writing this article just due to the fact that I had a buddy who had three(3) Zion Williamson Prizm Silver PSA 10's and had offers over $5,000 each and he turned them down because he believed the values were gong to get back to $6,000+...come to no surprise, the values started to go down in a realistic direction. Today, you can get a Zion Prizm Silver PSA 10 for $150-$200 range...when it comes to liquid cards, this has to be the biggest sports card hobby loss that we have ever seen!

Obviously, Zion Williamson is a very gifted and dominant player when he's healthy but it seems like he's injured more than 50% of the season and on a team that I don't see ever making it far into playoffs. We are 5 years into his career and that obsession is over with to where we have moved onto Victor Wembanyama

Now when it comes to Prizm PSA slabs. Basketball holds a much different value brackets than Football. Football Prizm has incredible value during release day and that first phase of grading for obvious reasons but then there comes the next phase of over population of both raw and graded cards. When it comes to NFL value with Prizm, it's an up and down roller coaster during the football season to where you have to hold your breath week-to-week dealing with poor performances and injuries such as CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson & Tua Tagovailoa...or maybe you get lucky with a few players like a Saquon Barkley, Josh Allen or Sam Darnold who have seen a huge spike in value.

Basketball is a much easier and stable market when it comes to sports card value as players can have a bad game and no one really reacts like they do when a QB throws 3 INT's in a game and everyone thinks they are the bust of the century. Seems as though there's more patience with NBA players as there's more games and market value doesn't really change until we get closer to playoffs  and that's where you can see major movements with players who can get red hot!

To summarize Prizm Sports Cards, be smart. If you're buying base cards and some color variations around release day, be quick to either sell right away or express grade because the longer you wait, the bigger the disappointment with soon become a reality because more product will be opened and it will be too late to get a better return on your investment. The best time to invest in NFL Prizm is during the offseason and a big piece of research you can do is to look for players who are in contract negotiations.
